Artificial intelligence is emerging as an important revenue stream for India’s largest IT services companies. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCLTech, Wipro and other technology firms are expanding AI-related services as global businesses invest in automation, data analytics, generative AI and AI-powered enterprise systems.
However, the increase in AI revenue has not yet translated into equally strong overall growth across the industry. The key question is whether AI is bringing entirely new business to IT companies or replacing traditional services that clients previously purchased.
TCS Reports Strong AI Revenue Momentum
Tata Consultancy Services reported that its annualised AI revenue run rate crossed $3.1 billion in the second quarter of FY2027, increasing 19.2% sequentially and accounting for more than 10% of its revenue, according to Business Today’s report published on October 16.
Despite the strong AI momentum, TCS reported year-on-year dollar revenue growth of 2.4%. The contrast illustrates why rising AI revenue should not automatically be interpreted as equivalent growth in a company’s total business.
An annualised revenue run rate is an estimate based on a recent period’s business activity. It is not the same as revenue actually recognised over an entire financial year.
HCLTech Sees Growth in Advanced AI Business
HCLTech has also reported substantial momentum in its advanced AI business. Its second-quarter results showed annualised Advanced AI revenue of $876 million, up 72% year-on-year in constant-currency terms, according to Business Today.
The company’s reported dollar revenue growth was 2.2% year-on-year in the same report. Separately, Reuters reported that HCLTech’s consolidated revenue rose 11.5% year-on-year to ₹35,620 crore in the September quarter, while net profit increased 21.2% to ₹5,132 crore. Reuters’ October 13 report also cited annualised advanced AI revenue of $219 million, up from $171 million in the previous quarter.
These AI figures come from different reporting contexts and measures; they should not be combined without checking each company’s precise definition and reporting period.
Wipro’s Results Highlight the Wider Growth Challenge
Wipro’s September-quarter results provide another example of the gap between technology investment and overall growth.
The company reported gross revenue of ₹24,753 crore, up 9.1% year-on-year. However, its IT services revenue increased only 0.6% year-on-year in constant-currency terms. Total bookings fell 22.9% sequentially in constant-currency terms to $2.595 billion.
These results show that AI opportunities are developing alongside uneven demand for traditional IT services and uncertainty about the pace at which new contracts will turn into revenue.
Why Rising AI Revenue Does Not Always Mean Faster Growth
There are several reasons AI revenue may rise without producing a similar increase in overall company revenue.
1. AI can replace existing services
Businesses may move application development, testing, maintenance and other work to AI-enabled delivery models. If those services become cheaper or require fewer billable hours, new AI revenue may partly replace existing revenue rather than add to it.
2. Customers expect productivity savings
AI can help technology providers complete work faster and more efficiently. But clients may negotiate lower prices to capture some of those savings. The benefit to the service provider then depends on pricing, delivery costs and the volume of additional work won.
3. New AI projects need time to scale
AI consulting, implementation, data engineering and agentic AI projects can create new demand. However, initial pilots and smaller deployments do not always turn immediately into large, recurring contracts.
4. Companies measure AI revenue differently
Some companies report an annualised AI revenue run rate, while others disclose revenue for specific advanced AI service categories. Different definitions mean headline figures are not necessarily directly comparable.
What This Means for India’s Digital Business Ecosystem
The AI transition is relevant not only to large IT service providers but also to businesses investing in their digital presence. Companies across industries are evaluating how AI can improve customer service, automate repetitive tasks, strengthen data analysis and support online growth.
For smaller businesses, practical adoption may begin with better website experiences, more efficient customer enquiries, content workflows, analytics and digital marketing operations. The value depends on measurable business outcomes-not simply on whether a company uses AI.
Desire India Today, which provides digital marketing, SEO and website development services, operates in this broader digital-business ecosystem. As businesses explore AI-enabled tools, the practical opportunity is to connect technology with improved online visibility, customer acquisition and business performance. This is an industry-context perspective, not a claim that Desire India Today reported AI revenue or is part of the financial results of the listed IT companies.

What Investors and Businesses Should Watch Next
The next stage of AI adoption will be judged by more than headline revenue figures. Important indicators include:
- The amount of genuinely new business generated by AI.
- Growth in total company revenue, not just AI-related revenue.
- New contract wins and how quickly they convert into recognised revenue.
- Whether productivity improvements support stronger margins.
- The balance between new AI projects and reduced spending on traditional services.
For India’s IT industry, the central challenge is to turn AI demand into sustainable, profitable growth while adapting to clients’ expectations of faster delivery and lower costs.
Conclusion: AI is becoming an increasingly important part of Indian IT services, but its long-term contribution will depend on whether companies can generate new demand and retain value from productivity gains. Rapid AI revenue growth is an encouraging sign; sustained overall growth will be the more meaningful test.
