Engineering Student Dies After Structure Collapses at Hyderabad College’s Dandiya Event

A first-year engineering student died and several people were injured after a lighting structure reportedly collapsed during a Dandiya event at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul, near Hyderabad, on Saturday, October 17.

The incident occurred during the college’s cultural celebrations, turning a festive gathering into a tragic accident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Student Identified as Sona Narayan Das

The deceased student was identified as Sona Narayan Das, a first-year Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) student, according to media reports.

Her sister, Meena Narayan Das, was also injured in the incident. Initial reports said she was in critical condition and receiving treatment at Pratyusha Hospital near Nadergul.

The incident also left several other attendees injured. Early media reports gave differing injury counts, ranging from 12 to 17, with some reports stating that many of the injured were out of danger.

Lighting Structure Reportedly Collapsed

According to preliminary reports, a metal arch or lighting structure installed for the event collapsed onto people gathered nearby. Some reports attributed the collapse to strong winds, although the circumstances and precise cause require confirmation through the investigation.

The structure reportedly fell suddenly, causing injuries and panic among those attending the celebrations. Injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Chief Minister Orders Action

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the student’s death and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

According to reports, he directed officials to ensure appropriate medical care for the injured and identify those responsible for the accident. He also called for strict action against anyone found accountable.

Investigation and Event Safety Questions

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of temporary structures, lighting installations and crowd management at college festivals and cultural events.

Investigators will need to establish why the structure collapsed, whether appropriate safety precautions were followed and whether any negligence contributed to the accident. Responsibility should be determined on the basis of the investigation rather than preliminary allegations.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of structural stability, weather precautions and emergency preparedness at public gatherings.
