Sanju Samson Special, Shreyas and Naman Cameos Help India Pull Off Highest Successful Chase Against New Zealand

Sanju Samson produced a blistering half-century before Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir delivered crucial contributions to help India defeat New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20 International at Hagley Oval. India chased down a target of 226, completing their highest successful run chase in T20 internationals.

The victory gave India a 1–0 lead in the five-match T20I series and demonstrated the depth of their batting line-up under pressure. India reached 230/6 in 19.4 overs, with two balls remaining.

New Zealand Post 225 as Glenn Phillips Shines

After India won the toss and elected to bowl, New Zealand made full use of the batting-friendly conditions. Finn Allen struck 45 off 24 balls, while Glenn Phillips delivered the standout innings, smashing an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries.

Bevon Jacobs added 31 from 16 balls, helping the hosts accelerate in the closing overs. Despite India taking wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand finished with a formidable 225/4 in 20 overs.

India's bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, but the total set up a thrilling chase under the lights in Christchurch.

Sanju Samson Sets the Tone

India's reply began aggressively, with Samson and Abhishek Sharma immediately putting pressure on the New Zealand attack.

Samson scored 67 off just 33 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes. Abhishek contributed 29 from 12 deliveries, and the pair added 93 runs for the opening wicket.

India raced to 94/1 during the powerplay, establishing a strong platform for the chase. Samson's attacking approach helped India maintain the required scoring rate even against New Zealand's experienced pace attack.

New Zealand Fight Back in the Middle Overs

New Zealand responded through their spinners, Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner, who slowed India's momentum and picked up important wickets.

Samson departed after his explosive innings, and India then lost Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan as the chase briefly became uncertain. The middle-order setbacks left India needing a stabilising partnership to remain on course.

Axar Patel joined Shreyas Iyer and helped rebuild the innings. Axar scored 24 off 14 balls, while Iyer kept the scoreboard moving and ensured India remained within reach of the target.

Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir Finish the Job

Captain Shreyas Iyer played a vital role in restoring control, scoring 42 off 28 balls. His partnership with Axar helped India recover, and he continued to attack when opportunities arose.

After Axar's dismissal, Naman Dhir took charge in the closing stages. Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 off just 15 balls, combining power with composure at a critical point in the chase.

Iyer and Dhir put India back in control with an important over against Santner. Although Iyer fell late in the innings, Dhir completed the job with a boundary and a six in the final over as India crossed the line at 230/6 in 19.4 overs.

A Record-Breaking Night for India

The chase marked India's highest successful run chase in T20 internationals, surpassing their previous best of 211 against Sri Lanka in 2009. It was also a significant achievement away from home, with India chasing a target of 226 against a strong New Zealand side.

The result puts India ahead in the series, but New Zealand's batting performance and their fightback through spin showed that the remaining matches could be closely contested.

What Comes Next?

India will look to carry the momentum into the second T20I, while New Zealand will aim to tighten their bowling and defend big totals more effectively.

For India, Samson's explosive start, Iyer's stabilising innings and Dhir's fearless finishing provided a blueprint for chasing large totals. The opening match has set an exciting tone for the rest of the series.

Final Score: New Zealand 225/4 (20 overs); India 230/6 (19.4 overs).
Result: India won by four wickets.
Series: India lead 1–0 in the five-match T20I series.
